Uber Pays $4.4 million to Resolve EEOC Sexual Harassment and Retaliation Charge


EEOC says that Uber permitted a culture of sexual harassment and retaliation

To resolve a 2017 EEOC Commissioner’s charge of sex discrimination, Uber Technologies, Inc. has entered into a nationwide agreement to strengthen its business culture against sexual harassment and retaliation.  EEOC found reasonable cause to believe that Uber permitted a culture of sexual harassment and retaliation against individuals complaining about harassment. 

A class fund of $4.4 million will be established to compensate anyone who EEOC determines experienced sexual harassment and/or related retaliation after January 1, 2014.  The company will also create a system for identifying employees who have been the subject of more than one harassment complaint and for identifying managers who fail to respond to concerns of sexual harassment in a timely manner.  With input from a third-party consultant, Uber will update its policies and will continue to conduct climate surveys and exit interviews focused on sexual harassment and retaliation.   The agreement also calls for the monitoring by an outside party for three years. 

All female employees who worked at Uber between January 1, 2014 and June 30, 2019 will receive a notice of the settlement with a questionnaire.  EEOC will use responses to a questionnaire to determine whether they may be a potential claimant eligible for monetary relief.
